Japanese Christianese: 200 Spiritual Vocabulary Words

While school stretches year round for me here in Japan, I’m thankful that the YMCA rewards our dedicated study with lengthy breaks between terms–breaks that enable to us to catch up on work, hobbies and do a little traveling. We have a some great photos from our trips we’ll put up in another post, but for this one, I wanted to share a side project I’ve been working on over the past few days.

Christianese

But first, one of my favorite Christianese terms:

hedge-of-protection-sm-1
A hedge growing. Note this one isn’t tall enough to fully protect the guy in the middle yet. With your prayers, it will grow faster.

hedge of protection

/ hɛdʒ ɒv prəˈtɛkʃ(ə)n /
noun

  1. a fence or boundary formed by closely growing spiritual bushes or shrubs, usually planted by Jesus personally, sometimes transplanted from heavenly gardens.
synonyms: hedgerow of protection, row of fiercely protective bushes, raptor fence, windbreak of safety, barricade of justice, quickset of impenetrability.
  2. a way by which Jesus protects you against financial loss or other adverse circumstances.
synonyms: safeguard of safeguards, safety safe protection, shield of faith, screen of something, heavenly angelic palace guard thingy, buffer state, squishy pillow-like cushion of comfort, fire insurance

Our ability to communicate in any language is only as good as our mastery of the present topic’s vocabulary. Christianity comes with it’s own unique set of words and expressions (Christianese) that challenge newer believers, even those who already speak the language. Understanding these concepts in a second language adds an entire layer of incomprehensibility to Christian conversation.

For my own benefit, I started to search for vocabulary lists that specifically focus on Christian conversation and prayer, and found some great resources over at jema.org, which I’ve used to kick start the list of about 200 words below. Unfortunately, the JEMA documents were photocopied PDFs and seem to have misplaced the originals, which made it impossible to extract the lists for flash cards. I’ve done the work to retype the complete vocabulary list, which you should be able to copy and paste into excel to format for whatever flashcard software/apps you prefer. I love Anki, and I’ll probably never give it up, but I’ve heard good things about Memrise as well.

Below the list, I’ve also typed up a few of JEMA’s example sentences and translated 74 of them to English for your to see the vocab in use. Sorry, no furigana. 🙁

Collaboration

If you have a list or words you’ve translated that you’d like to add, or if you notice errors (they are inevitable) or ways to improve the translations, please let me know! I’d love to collaborate to build this list and make it available to others.

Great post, bro.

But you forgot the most important word of all, which if we do not use it, God will not hear us:

Just

God, please just put a hedge of protection around Erich.
God, just give us more of your presence.
We just want to say thank you.

Thanks for the list of words and for you work in preparing it!
In scanning over the words briefly, I noticed the following that need correction:
#122 魂(たましい)
#137 教理(きょうり)
#193 願い(ねがい)

Was googling for “Christian words in Japanese” and this was the top result. Started reading, thought “wow, this is great.” Not until I saw Vince’s comment did I realize who’s website I was on…

Do Christian Japanese Speakers use 敬語 (Keigo) (or any other forms of honorific speech) when they pray or refer to God/Jesus/Holy-Spirit?

Hi Scott, thank you for your question! I think it can depend on context, but when talking *about* God with other Christians, we typically use honorifics. E.g. ”Jesus said” -> 「イエス様はおっしゃいました。」or 「イエス様は言われました。」 You’ll find this in many Japanese translations of the Bible as well. That said, how you pray is up to you!

Great post man! I can’t seem to export the excel to a file type that Ankidroid accepts. Do you have the Ankidroid file available for export too?

I notice on your list when you say mikuni mikao mikokoro you forgot a kanji: 御 is the kanji you use for 御国 御顔 御心 etc…

Hikaru,
Thank you for your feedback! I think you’re absolutely right—that kanji would typically be included. This list was imported from an older JEMA list, and I think it’s original creator omitted those kanjis intentionally to make it easier for Japanese-language learners to digest.
Have a wonderful day!

I noticed that Christ in this blog is クリスト but the bible and all Japanese Christians say キリスト。Even in your Japanese sentence example it says キリスト.
